In the olden days, information was passed through an elaborate game of telephone played by "explorers." Result: Oliver Goldsmith's History of the Earth and Animated Nature, a comprehensive "encyclopedia" of the natural world published in 1774, in which animals never seen in the English-speaking world are illustrated like alien creatures. Lest we forget, the game is still being played today by "bloggers," and "wikipedia trolls." Ampersand's exhibit of original engravings from the first American edition of Animated Nature in 1775 reminds us of this.
