(1) The "progressive portfolio" at the state legislature needs to be diversified to represent more interests and issues. Both candidates for this position are qualified. As the director for "Better People," a job training organization for former felons, Shields brings a working knowledge about how to best and properly integrate felons back into our communities. With a flood of Measure 11 convicts about to hit the streets again, the state needs programs to address this concern.

(2) Lonnie... we're throwing you a bone here. You may not have been treated with 100% fairness during the same-sex marriage debate, but a man of your position shouldn't be such a crybaby. Use your next term in office to figure out why people aren't inviting you to their parties.

(3) No... for now. Instead, Portland should change its charter to adopt an "instant runoff" format. This means that voters would have the opportunity to vote for their top two candidates during the primary election. The top two vote getters would advance to the general election, regardless of whether or not one candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote. This format provides more depth and allows voters to pare down their choices during a primary election without feeling like they have to eliminate a good, alternative candidate. Effectively this format would allow voters to choose both candidates for the general election.
